It can’t be denied that Manny Pacquiao has elevated himself into the pantheon of the greatest boxers of all time. He is worthy to be named alongside the sport’s legends such as Willie Pep, Muhammad Ali, and Jack Dempsey to name a few. But like any legends of the old, Pacquiao did not escape criticisms from boxing aficionados and casual fans alike.
From the Mayweathers dropping unfounded steroid allegations to fans cyring for Pacquiao to fight young up-comers, it seems there is no pleasing everybody for the 8-division Filipino champion. Just recently, WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez questioned Pacquiao’s recent outing and his choice of opponents.
“He (Pacquiao) is picking guys that are easy to beat, so when you do this, it isn’t hard to be pound-for-pound,” the Argentine boxer said in an interview.
Pacquiao is slated to a third showdown with aging warrior Juan Manuel Marquez this November. While many like the idea of a third clash between the two to settle an overdue grudge, many (writer included) have felt that Marquez is way beyond his prime and comfort zone to compete with Pacquiao.
“Pac is becoming a victim of his own success,” says the Chicago, Illinois-based professional boxing trainer Shannon States. States knows his boxing and is best known as the boxing coach for female MMA sensation Felice Herrig. And when States talk about boxing, one can be sure there is weight to every word.
“Pac has annihilated, decimated, and dominated everybody that has been put in front of him and when you areTHAT GOOD for THAT LONG people tend to question your ability,” States told this writer. Pacquiao has never been defeated since losing to Erik Morales in their first fight in March 2005.
Critics have bombarded Pacquiao with a number of questions. According to States, the barrage will never end.
“They also look for any little thing they can to try and pull you down like “Pac is fighting too many old fighters.” “Pac is on steriods.” “Why won’t Pac take the test?” “Pac is scared to fight anybody outside of Top Rank.” Et cetera et cetera,” States said.
“Trust me,,Pac will continue to get criticize if he doesn’t start fighting some of the young guys,” States told this writer. States believe that Pacquiao should take on Victor Ortiz and Tim Bradley next if Floyd Mayweather still won’t come to agreement for a fight.
