Cebu City, Philippines – Undefeated knockout artist Dodie Boy Penalosa, Jr. (5-0, 5 KOs) understands that a win in this Saturday’s fight over Kong Kiatpracha Gym (5-8-1, 4 Kos) of Thailand inches him closer to boxing stardom.
In the final press conference for this Saturday’s event, dubbed Laban ng Lahi: Dugong Kampeon, held here at the Sports Exchange Bar and Grill, Cebu City, uncle and promoter Gerry Penalosa confirmed that his nephew might get the chance to fight in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Marquez III boxing event. The former two-division world champion turned promoter, however, said that everything hangs on how Dodie Jr. fares on fight night.
“It all depends on how my nephew performs this Saturday,” Gerry said. “If everything goes well, we plan to have Dodie Jr. fight for a regional title next year.”
Dodie Jr.’s father Dodie Sr., a world champion himself, mirrors his younger brother Gerry’s sentiments. He wishes for his son to do good against the Thai. A victory will put Dodie Jr. in a good position with Manny Pacquiao, who has the leverage to put the young boxer in the undercard of his event.
“I don’t want to approach Manny (Pacquiao) and ask him to put my son in his event if my son performs poorly,” said the oldest of the Penalosa boxing family.
Asked by this writer if the chance to appear and fight in a huge boxing event added more pressure, he admitted that he is excited by the prospect.
“I am on a high just thinking about it,” Dodie Jr. said. “But I am not losing focus on my next fight. I will try my best to give everyone a good fight.”
I want Tyson Marquez
Slated to appear in the boxing event is former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel “The Mandaue Kid” Mayol (28-5-2, 19 KOs), who will go against Jayson Rotoni (12-9-1, 7 KOs) in a 10-round contest in the flyweight division.
Mayol accepted the fight with the purpose to keep himself busy, but has told the sports media that he wants a shot at reigning WBA flyweight titlist Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (31-2, 24 KOs) of Mexico. Marquez is coming off a TKO victory over Filipino contender Edrin Dapudong.
Mayol was initially tapped to fight Marquez months back but declined the offer because the of the close proximity of the fight date when the invitation was given. The title shot was next offered to Dapudong.
“I pray Manny gives me this chance and set me up with Tyson Marquez,” Dapudong said. “I can take him.”
Dapudong is currently fighting under the MP Promotions banner, the promotional outfit owned by Pacquiao.
Also scheduled to fight on Saturday’s event is former OPBF champion Jimrex Jaca. Jaca once fought Mexican ring legend Juan Manuel Marquez for the interim WBO featherweight belt.
Laban ng Lahi: Dugong Kampeon will be held on August 6, 2011, 6PM at the Mandaue City Sports Complex. Tickets will be sold on the spot. TV telecast will be on the following day on GMA 7 at 10:30AM.
