World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is looking to defend his title soon and one possible opponent is Mexican Christian Mijares.
Mijares is set to take on Colombian Eddy Julio for the WBC International super bantamweight title and he is confident that a win will give him a good shot of landing a title fight against the four-division Filipino boxing champion.
“I’m very motivated and had excellent training and on Saturday you will see me highly motivated and ready to reclaim my position at the top of the boxing world,” Mijares said in an interview with Boxingscene.com.
“Right now I’m focused on succeeding against the Colombian and if we come out fine – then we’ll focus on the fight with Donaire, who I’m sure I can beat,” Mijares confidently said.
Aside from Mijares, World Boxing Association bantamweight ruler Anselmo Moreno of Panama is also aching to trade blows with Donaire, who ranked 4th in The Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound rankings.
Moreno, who is No.1 ranked bantamweight, will be defending his title against David Dela Mora this weekend in Texas, but he already expressed his intention to move up in weight with Donaire being the target for his next fight.
“That’s a dream of mine. I’ve been dreaming about it, thinking about it, and that is something that I look forward to,” said Moreno in an interview with RingTV when asked about the possibility of getting title shot against Donaire. “Work my way up to 122 pounds and fighting Nonito Donaire is definitely something that I have on my mind.”
South African IBF champion Jeffrey “Mongoose” Mathebula is also being considered by Top Rank Promotion as Donaire’s opponent on his next fight that could take place on July 14 or 21 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
