WBO light flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes (29-1-3, 1Kos) will be defending his title against Mexican Felipe Salguero (16-2-1, 11Kos) in the main event of “Pinoy Pride XIV” fightcard on June 2 at the Resorts World Hotel and Casino in Pasay.
Nietes, who is known for walking into the ring with his python wrapped around his neck, will be defending his title for the first time after capturing the belt via convincing unanimous decision win over Ramon Garcia of Mexico in Bacolod last year.
The two-division world champion is expected to be the heavy favorite going into their June 2 showdown, but ALA promotion president Michael Aldeguer warns Nietes not to relax on his laurels.
Aldeguer admitted that they are not familiar with Salguero and they know nothing about the Mexican slugger aside from he is the seventh-ranked light flyweight in WBO rankings.
The Mexican boxer, who hails from Toluca, is currently riding on a hot streak. Salguero lost in his first two professional fights, but seemed to realize his potential after that, winning in his last 14 fights.
In his last fight, Salguero proved that he is worthy of a title shot after scoring an impressive fifth-round KO victory over Carlos Melo last January 28 in Tijuana, Mexico – a win that earned him a shot on Nietes’ title.
But despite the current winning run of Salguero, Nietes remains confident and vows to defend his title successfully in front of an expected jam-packed venue in Pasay.
The 29-year-old Nietes is only the sixth Filipino fighter to capture world titles in two different divisions. The Negros Occidental-native reigned as the WBO minimumweight champion before capturing his current world light flyweight title.
Aside from Nietes, WBO Intercontinental flyweight champion Milan Melindo (26-0, 10 Kos) will also be defending his title, while super bantamweight protégée Genesis Servania (17-0, 5 KO’s) will also be featured in the 14th edition of the Pinoy Pride event organized by ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN sports.
