Due to the inability of former champion Ulises Solis to defend his title before the deadline given, the International Boxing Federation named Johnriel Casimero as the new junior flyweight champion.
In a statement release by IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker, Solis’ doctor informed the federation that Solis would not be allowed to do exercises from three to four months after the operation done on May 29 to repair his broken jaw.
Solis reportedly sustained the injury after getting into trouble with 154-pound boxer Saul “Canelo” Alvarez due to a personal issue. IBF handed Ulises an extension on his mandatory title defense, but due to the recent medical reports, the federation concluded that Solis can’t fight before the October 30 deadline.
“Based on the information, it is the IBF’s determination that Solis will be unable to defend the IBF Jr. Flyweight Title on or before October 30, 2012,” Tucker said. “Therefore, effective immediately the IBF declares that Johnriel Casimero the new IBF Jr. Flyweight Champion. The IBF wishes Solis the best of luck and a speedy recovery.”
Casimero became the interim champion when she shocked Argentinean boxing icon Luis Lazarte, scoring a 10th-round knockout that disappointed the crowd, which led to him and his camp being attacked by Lazarte’s supporters.
Meanwhile, AJ Banal (27-1-0, 20 KO’s) will step on the ring this Saturday in a fight that is arguably a preparation for his upcoming world title shot.
Banal, who is tipped to fight Thai Pungluang Sor Singyu (42-1-0, 27 KO’s) for the vacant World Boxing Organization bantamweight title, will be facing Indonesia’s Ruben Manakane (7-7-0, 5 KO’s) in a non-title bout on Saturday at the Dumaguete City Quadrangle.
The 23-year-old Cebu native is coming off a scintillating first-round knockout victory over Raul Hidalgo last March, while Manakane dropped his last two fights and won only twice in his last eight bouts.
Ruben is the younger brother of Nouldy Manakane, whom Banal dismantled in the fourth round of their bout on January 2009 in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
