Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire made the Philippines glow once again in the boxing map after being handed two major awards by the World Boxing Organization.
According to a report in PhilBoxing.com website, the former pound-for-pound king was the unanimous choice for the WBO Fighter of the Decade award after winning titles in eight different divisions in the last decade, which is considered as the most remarkable feat in boxing history.
Pacquiao was also the organization’s welterweight king since 2009 when he dismantled former champion Miguel Cotto but the 33-year-old boxer lost his title when absorbed a controversial defeat to Timothy Bradley last June.
On the other hand, Donaire earned the award with his remarkable performance this year. He started the year by claiming the super bantamweight crown with a split decision win over Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. last February. He successfully defended it against African champion Jeffrey Mathebula last July and recently against Toshiaki Nishioka, whom he knocked out in the ninth round of their bout last October 14 in California.
Meanwhile, aside from Pacquiao and Donaire, another Filipino took the spotlight after WBO gave a special award to PhilBoxing.com editor and owner Dong Secuya, who was obviously surprised by the award.
WBO president Paco Valcarcel said that Secuya and the website contributed a lot to the boxing world by providing the latest news not only about Filipino boxers but also about the big-name bouts including those that were sanctioned by the organization.
After accepting the award that was personally handed by Valcarcel on top the stage, Secuya said: “I have already received numerous citations and awards but this is the most prestigious and coveted so far. This will encourage me further to work for excellence and to give the best to our audience around the globe.”
Since being established in 2005, PhilBoxing.com has been continuously growing and is now considered as one of the top boxing websites in the world today.
