In a report from Manila Standard Today, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum was quoted as saying that the rematch between Donaire and Australian boxer Vic Darchinyan is highly possible.
Arum made the statement after Darchinyan expressed his intention to fight Donaire once again and asked Arum to talk about it with his manager. The possible rematch could be arranged easily because Donaire and Darchinyan are both under Top Rank Promotions.
Donaire, the 2012 Boxer of the Year, rose to prominence when he scored a scintillating 5th-round knockout win over the then-undefeated Darchinyan. Since losing his IBF and IBO flyweight belts, Darchinyan has been very vocal about his eagerness to redeem himself against Donaire.
Darchinyan, who is coming from a 4th-round TKO win over Javier Gallo, said after his recent win: “I felt good in there. I got the rust out and now I’m ready for a big fight. Fighting Nonito Donaire would have special significance for me. It’s the rematch I always wanted. I know he’s planning to return. I’m here, ready and willing. I want to finally get my revenge.”
Donaire, on the other hand, has recovered from a shoulder operating last April and is back in training for his next bout later this year.
When asked about the rumored rematch with the heavy-hitting Australian, Donaire said: “I won’t back down from any fighter. I feel great.”
Darchinyan’s camp is pushing for the fights to be scheduled in September, but the date could be out of the picture because Donaire’s shoulder could be not yet fully-healed by that time.
